Official Meridian 59 Newsletter 04-26-2002
4/26/2002 3:28:04 PM - Gilroy

Another newsletter! Woo!
Sorry about last week. My workday was cut short and there just wasn't much to talk about so we skipped the newsletter. We're back to fill you all in.

The biggest news is in the next heading. As we mentioned in the last newsletter, bringing Meridian 59 to the world in local languages is in the works and this is only the first of hopefully many licensees running Meridian 59 in their own countries. Very exciting stuff.

We also have the latest patch, info about the new level from Rob, and we close with links so you can get your account (or more accounts) and mousepads. Here we go…

Meridian 59 Deutschland
We're happy to announce that our discussions have gone well and we've come to an agreement with MDO Games to bring Meridian 59 back to Germany! Check out the full Press Release and German fans can read the MDO Press Release in German. Thanks to all of our German fans for their support and patience as we worked to get this agreement in place!

Latest Patch
These changes are now live in the game.

  • Fixed Cure Poison to work when it removes the poison.
  • Slightly lowered duration on Gaze of the Basilisk's hold.
  • Fixed bug in rentable rooms where people with rooms at multiple inns that paid rent to either innkeeper only increased the rent for one room.
  • Changed reagents for Sporeburst.
  • Eliminated possibility for a weaker Anti-Magic Aura to replace a stronger one
  • Made duration for Anti-Magic Aura more random in line with other spells.
  • Player must now take a full penalty death to get rid of a revenant. No more Portal of Life exploits.
  • Changed Seafarer's Peak and the Dreaded Caves of Ice to only penalize the improve rate of area of effect spells.
  • Fixed various problems with different item and weapon attributes. This includes faction and guild hall defense weapons.
  • Fixed bug causing players to take "real" deaths during assassin's game.
  • Changed it so that portal of life still gives a higher minimum penalty.
  • Changed it so that you cannot have an angel and get on top of the crate and rummage around in the open crate in CV.
  • Capped improves in Raza to 25% for all skills and spells.
  • Fixed detect good/evil so that it doesn't flash enemies of the same alignment of the viewer. In other words, detect good will no longer show good players good targets.
  • Fixed it so that the trading post on island is now properly a safe logoff point.
  • Fixed the system to disable logoff penalties if server population drops too far.
  • NPC chatter is back.
  • Artifice was fixed. For those unfamiliar with the spell, it creates a false item attribute on a weapon, such as Q's insignia, etc. Be aware of this when buying items.
  • Second wind will no longer kick in if you have a Token or Ring of Lethargy. The skill was always intended to be harder to work up, since the bonus at the high end is rather nice.
  • Create Food was also changed to create less food, as was originally intended. The cost of the spell is being evaluated due to the reduction in food created.

Rob Expands the Marion Crypt
As ordering and shipping have somewhat stabilized and we're coming closer to having the new billing company integrated and online, I've found myself with a little time to get back to work at what I do best… making levels.

As noted in the title of the game and as we've stated in the past, we're working on expanding the story and cultures of the undead. The first step of this was the addition of the Marion Crypt with the new monster type, the Spectral Mummies. As you all know most of the new crypt was actually recycled from the demo area of the game with a few changes made to the start and end of the level. This was done to save time and get some new stuff into the game while I was tied up getting things running.

However it wasn't added without thought. There's a lot of fun in store but it's hard to write about the additions. Tell too much too soon and when the content is finally released it already seems old and stale. So we'll start off with the next level. This is being worked on now and as soon as I can finish it up we'll test it out and put it in. This could be a week, it could be more, it could be less, all depending on how much time I have to dedicate to building.

I've put a handful of screenshots online for you all to check out. What's really exciting about this level is that a new monster type will be introduced along with more story, and it hints at things to come. The mana node seen in the screenshots won't be accessible until more levels of the crypt have been completed. So as I'm building this I have to think carefully and build so that it works with the levels below. It'll be great fun as the story unfolds around these new areas and players learn more about the past and future of the world of Meridian 59!
