There can be no doubt that Meridian 59 deserves a place in the annals of online gaming history as one of the category's pioneering titles. Development began around 1995, the brainchild of brothers Andrew and Christopher Kirmse. 3DO acquired the title in the spring of 1996 and released it that September. A number of free downloadable updates followed during the next couple of years - Vale of Sorrow, Revelation, Renaissance, Dark Auspices and Liberation. With contributions from familiar names like Damion Schubert and Rich Vogel, the game developed a highly enthusiastic player community, but for various reasons, it never managed to approach the levels of popularity achieved by other online titles that followed.
