Well, other than not dying, there is not much you can do to avoid losses unless you are friends with a Shal'ille character who has 6th level and is able to cast Portal of Life (this is true not only for maxed characters, but for anyone).

When Portal of Life is cast on you, you will need to get up on the center platform of the Underworld quickly and go through the portal there. You will return to your body with less severe damage to your skills/spells (sometimes you won't suffer any loss at all) and often you won't even lose a hit point.

Another option, though not quite as guarenteed as Portal of Life would be to use the Underworld node as a portal. Upon solving the node puzzle (you can download the program in our Downloads section, simply walk through it.

Be forewarned, it will teleport you to your body so be careful if you were killed in a war. This should lessen some of the penalties you would normally get from a death.
